The confession

Tom calls and states I'm wasting my time by studying Mike's footage. He explains how he is skywatching night and day and shot some good stuff and never made any money from his skywatching. He was sick of Mike going out and faking footage to sell at conventions and UFO mags and he made some decent pocket money on it according to Tom.

What Tom told me I sworn I would not disclose. It wasn't really much of an eye opener pursay. I had already figured out long ago Hawkins had videos and evidence he didn't want me to see. Infact I don't know of anyone in the field that has done a case study on him or his footage in an indepth manner.

Mike always had reasons not to send me quality videos I wanted to study. By this point I had figured out pattern in his taping that is not consistent with other skywatchers I was incontact with. Nearly all of the suspect videos Hawkins distributes contains "footprints of a hoax". For instance he would usually tape most of these sightings in wideangle if he zoomed into the object, you might see strings, or worse might be discovered. Even if Hawkins did zoom in it was brief and usually slightly out of focus. Also any video with /slashes/ in the timestamp along with mainly wideangles became a decent roadmap to idenitfy which ones were fake.

At this point I shelved all of Hawkins footage and deleted all work I did on him from my hard drives. I was basically pissed off also. I wasted many hours studying his videos when I could have worked on something more worthwhile. It appears that and a good part of his videos are purposefully created only to make a few bucks off video sales in the back of a UFO mag. This was against everything I skywatched for. Everyone I knew who was a skywatcher said this is simply a line you never cross. It's basically a UFO Felony to commit an act like this. Sabourin and many of us debated why a person would do such a thing. Hawkins certainly has two or three real UFO events captured in Gulf Breeze in front of people to verify this. Why would he go out and produce these cheesy photo/videos and ruin all of his legit videos?

Of all the skywatchers I know we all agree this is career suicide. Why flush down the toilet all those hours of skywatching and your videos on a stupid act of hoaxing?


Mike calls me again. Typically Mike was using calling cards and had no permanent phone at the time. I pressed him on some of the hoaxing issues I'd discovered. He confessed, to a degree.

He confessed that initially he set out to make some baloney videos and give them to the local leading UFO researchers (MUFON). In hopes they take them to national TV shows and expose them. Later he would pull the rug out from under them showing how they just jumped on the Gulf Breeze bandwagon. He said it backfired and now he is in a position he can't get out of.

I spoke with him one other time on the phone and when I steered the conversation to the suspect evidence he basically admits he did fake some stuff. Which ones? I couldn't get answers on that, as he was evasive about it. Basically I think that we both know which ones were faked.

Mike's chance to come clean on this issues failed. His still continues to distribute this rack of manfactured UFO evidence to unwilling suckers who come across his material without knowing any better. I guess there is a sucker born every minute.

Let's take a close critical look at the evidence Mike Hawkins refuses to discuss with the public that he sells to.
